One burger that has been a consistent favorite among McDonald’s customers for several years is the McDouble Cheeseburger. It’s a McValue menu item, and it’s in good company with the Quarter Pounder, McNuggets, and French fries. A simple burger with two beef patties, mustard, ketchup, pickles, and cheese, it can be enjoyed just as it is or customized. I like to add tomatoes and lettuce to all of my burgers. But instead of fussing with ordering a customized fast-food burger, I like to make them myself from home.
The recipe we’re sharing below is a very simple McDouble Cheeseburger recipe that you can make in about 20 minutes for a family of four. The beef patties are just lightly seasoned with onion flakes (or onion powder), salt, and pepper. Melt a slice of cheese between two patties, and lightly toast your hamburger buns for a tasty, warm, homemade version of McDonald’s McDouble. Be sure to press your beef patties out to about 1/8 of an inch thick because once you have two patties on your burger, it can be a bit thick.
I serve these burgers with thin French fries – not quite the same as McDonald’s fries, but I deep fry them and add a lot of salt, so we still enjoy them.
McDouble Cheeseburger Recipe

- 1 tbsp dried onion flakes
- 1/2 of an onion, sliced
- 2 lbs ground beef
- salt and pepper to taste
- 4 tbsp ketchup
- 4 tbsp mustard
- 8 dill pickle slices
- 4 slices American cheese
- 4 hamburger buns
First, place the 2 pounds of ground beef into a bowl. Then add the onion flakes, salt, and pepper, and mix well.
Once the meat and seasoning have been mixed, divide the beef into 8 balls. Then press them flat on waxed paper until they’re about 1/8 inch thick.
Heat your frying pan to medium heat. Place 1 to 2 patties at a time on the pan, and cook them for about 2-3 minutes per side with a lid covering the pan. You may want to slightly salt each side as you cook them.
Place each cooked patty on a plate lined with paper towels.
With your frying pan still on the heat, place the hamburger buns on, lightly toasting them.
On the top bun, spread the ketchup, mustard, and onion, and top it with 1-2 pickle slices. Add one beef patty, then one slice of American cheese, and another beef patty on top of that. Place the bottom bun on the burger, turn it right side up, and serve hot.
- While putting your burgers together, if the beef patties are not piping hot, here’s a tip. Construct the burger as instructed, and place the entire burger in the microwave for 10-15 seconds. This helps to melt the cheese and keeps the top of the bun soft- similar to McDonald’s buns.
- Just like ordering a custom burger at McDonald’s you can do the same thing from home! I like to add lettuce and tomato to my homemade McDouble for a crisp fresh bite.
