In early June of this year, McDonald’s released four new “Worldwide Favorites” items to the US menu. These included the Grand McExtreme Bacon Burger from Spain, Cheesy Bacon Fries from Australia, the Stroopwafel McFlurry from the Netherlands, and the Tomato-Mozzarella Chicken Sandwich from Canada. Each menu item is meant to bring a bit of McDonald’s international flair to US customers. So let’s dig into this Grand McExtreme Bacon Burger review.

History and Inspiration

The idea behind the “Worldwide Favorites” menu is to offer a type of international exchange program in which McDonald’s would offer its popular menu items from other US customers. We can taste a Spanish version of a quarter pounder and enjoy a Stroopwafel McFlurry as a dessert without having to buy a plane ticket. It’s an exciting concept, and it seems most of us will try an international menu item out of curiosity more than anything. Luckily none of these menu items are too foreign that Americans would have a hard time accepting them, so it seems like a winning idea.

Grand McExtreme Bacon Burger Review

Inside is a quarter-pound meat patty with a slice of melted real Gouda cheese over the top. Then there are a few pieces of thick-cut Applewood smoked bacon, slivered caramelized onions, and a special McBacon sauce, which looks a lot like Big Mac sauce. Beneath all of these ingredients are more onions and more sauce, all served inside a fresh sesame seed bun.

1.      Taste and Texture [2/5]

For this Grand McExtreme Bacon Burger review, let’s begin with the basics. It was served hot and fresh in a special box for McDonald’s special “Worldwide Favorites” items. It looks like a bacon burger and seems very appetizing, especially when you see how many layers of ingredients are inside. The onions were good for crunch but not for flavor. The bun was the same as you’d get one a Quarter Pounder, so it was soft and airy. I wasn’t a fan of the sauce at all. There was too much of it, and it tasted too much like mayo instead of a special McBacon sauce I was expecting. As far as being “grand” or “extreme” in size, flavor, or ingredients, it definitely was not.

2. Are they healthy? [1/5]

One extreme thing is the calorie count- the Grand McExtreme has 750 calories. For comparison, a regular cheeseburger from McDonald’s has 250 calories, and a Big Mac has 257 calories. It’s also high in carbs, high in sodium, and high in saturated fats.

3. Are they Worth it? [2/5]

My first issue with this burger is that there are only four bacon pieces, and that’s not extreme. I can cook and eat a package of bacon by myself and keep going. My second issue with this burger is the sauce. It had a strong mayonnaise flavor with some spices added to it, but the flavor wasn’t impressive or extreme. What was extreme was the amount of sauce slathered on the burger. Had it been a tasty, zingy sauce, maybe it would have been ok. Or perhaps if there had been an extreme amount of meat or bacon to soak up the extra sauce, it would have been tolerable. I also thought the onions were cooked unevenly. I like my slivered onions to be sweet and caramelized, and on this burger, they were more mixed between sweet and charred. Also, not very extreme, and I didn’t think it was worth being labeled a Worldwide Favorite.

Final Verdict

I like the idea and the sentiment behind it- making the world a little smaller and more familiar by bringing menu items from McDonald’s chains around the world and offering them to customers here in the US. But this burger wasn’t very impressive. While the price might be comparable to a burger I might find in Spain, I would have expected it to have a bit more pizazz.

Grand McExtreme Bacon Burger Pricing

You can get the Grand McExtreme Bacon Burger for $6.89, but the price varies by location. You can also order it as a combo with a drink and medium fries for nearly $10. I can’t figure out why it’s so expensive unless it’s due to the bacon our gouda cheese. But even then, there are only four slices of bacon, and American cheese would have been just as good. In fact, I’d recommend ordering the Quarter Pounder with Cheese Bacon Burger, which tastes way better and only costs $6.69. Or if you’re looking for something huge, go for the Grand Big Mac, which only costs about $5.50 and is more fitting to its name.
